I never imagined I’d ever come across a real Mad Max-style community. It was like entering a film set. Slab City, East Jesus, California is a desert outpost, home to the “unwanted and unwashed,” is a patchwork of torn-up RVs, campers, weather-beaten tents, and dilapidated huts. Amidst this wild, brushy landscape, residents express themselves through unique, recycled art. I had the pleasure of meeting Scotto, a “recycled” artist who creates striking pieces from discarded scraps and junk. Their creativity thrives in this raw, off-grid environment, transforming trash into thought-provoking treasures.
