Let Down is an original screen print born from a radical deconstruction of craft. After reaching a level of technical perfection that felt sterile, the artist, Oli Fowler, abandoned digital precision to reclaim the “human friction” of the medium. Guided by his manifesto—”If it’s fun, I want some; if it’s a chore, I don’t want it anymore”—this work replaces clinical control with raw intuition and handmade positives.

The composition features a riotous bouquet of stylised flowers erupting from a vibrating field of fluorescent horizontal stripes. Rendered in blue, purple, and electric gold, the blooms overlap against a background of dense, humming colour. Fowler uses the flower motif as a deliberate aesthetic constraint, providing a sense of order within a chaotic explosion of ink and texture.

Mounted on a found wooden board salvaged from the local community, the piece is anchored by the physical history of its base. The vibrant, spontaneous energy of the print contrasts with the weathered, lived-in surface of the timber, resulting in a work that is tactile, honest, and unashamedly celebratory of the “beauty of the mess.”
