Bessie let me photograph her, inviting me into her home. It was modest and chaotic—ashtrays scattered, signs of a tough life everywhere. As she talked about her family, it was clear she had weathered hard times. Whether she still struggles with addiction or once lived a life on the margins, there’s something magnetic about her. There’s a spark in her eyes that speaks of resilience and vitality.
She fretted about her unkempt hair and questioned why I’d want to take her photo. All the while, she shared snippets of her life with a warm humor that contrasted with her surroundings. As I directed her to pose, she held the doorframe and looked over my shoulder, exuding a strength that belies her circumstances. In this moment, she appeared dignified and compassionate—a far cry from how society might judge her.
