Mr Controversial is a London based artist who works with vintage imagery, he brings it back to life with oil paint and comical, satirical captions. Mr Controversial works with a concept called ‘The Familiar Surprise’, although this image is new and you have not seen it before, it looks somewhat familiar and triggers an emotional or nostalgic response. Mr Controversial draws from his professional experience in advertising to create his work; during his time working on campaigns for a variety of brands, he began to understand the science behind why we buy things- due to his understanding of marketing psychology, this also added to his frustration of our social media obsessed world. Mr Controversial’s work is now focused on relatability, shareability and storytelling, not Ad campaigns for brands.
“Each piece should be instantly relatable to the viewer, as if you have stumbled upon something that hits the nail on the head of your own everyday life, making the ordinary extraordinary & hilariously absurd. If you don’t look at my art and think ‘OMG that’s so true’ or ‘That’s SOOO me, I can relate’ and if you aren’t blown away by the aesthetic in the imagery and oil paint… then I haven’t bloody done my job!”
